The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to Northeast-10 opponent Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) on Wednesday, September 23. The Panthers held SCSU to an attack percentage of .114 or lower in each game, collecting a 3-0 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 9-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while SCSU falls to 13-1 and 2-1 in the Northeast-10.
Play was very back and forth in the opening points of game one, until the Owls claimed a 12-8 lead. From there Jennifer McKenna took the serve for Adelphi and the Panthers reeled off eight straight points, to take control 16-12. Adelphi was firmly in control the remainder of game one, collecting a 25-16 win, that was closed out by a Patawe Simms kill.
The second game was tight until late in the contest, as it was knotted at 18. However, a Hilary Pavels kill gave the Panthers a one point edge, 19-18 and that was all the momentum Adelphi needed, scoring six of the next eight points, including a service ace by Amy Williams that gave the Panthers a 25-20 win.
Game three was more of the same, as it was tight early, but this time SCSU rallied late to take a 19-17 edge on a Jenna Tammel service ace. An Adelphi time out stalled the Owls momentum and helped the Panthers to stifle SCSU on the way to a 25-19 victory.
Adelphi was led by Pavels 10 kills and Heather Mau's 34 digs. Chelsea Overhold added nine kills and Simms chipped in eight, while Williams had a 17 digs.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, September 26 when they take on AIC and Molloy in Springfield, Massachusetts.
