The Adelphi University men's soccer team played host to LaSalle University on Sunday, September 20 in a non-conference clash on Competition Field. The Panthers fell behind, 1-0, early but reeled off three straight goals, picking up a 3-2 win. With the victory Adelphi improves to 3-1-2 overall, while the Explorers fall to 2-3-1.
The visitors pressured Adelphi early and broke through in the 26th minute Ryan Richter scored the first of LaSalle's two goals on the day. Richter got behind the defense just past midfield and streaked toward the Panther goal, slotting the ball past a diving Kyle Blackmer, who got a hand on it, but could not make the save.
Issa Tall answered back for Adelphi 10 minutes later as he collected a Steven Rivera pass and slipped one past LaSalle goalkeeper, Kyle Quigley. Adelphi and LaSalle would enter the half knotted at one as the first frame was played pretty even, with the Panthers claiming a slight edge in shots, 7-6 and the Explorers a 4-0 win in corner kicks.
John Koutsounadis gave Adelphi the lead, 20 minutes into the second period as a Tall header was blocked right to the feet of a waiting Koutsounadis, who sent a ball into the back of the LaSalle net. The Panthers put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute when Brandon Stoneham rushed upfield with the ball, beating several Explorer defenders and sent the Domenico Parrelli's way. Parrelli collected the feed and struck a shot that beat Quigley, giving Adelphi a 3-1 edge.
LaSalle made things interesting in the last few minutes as Ryan Tadley picked up his first tally of the night when a shot was deflected off the post to Tadley who made the score 3-2 with just under 10 minutes left in the game. Adelphi was able to hold LaSalle off for the remainder of the half, collecting a 3-1 victory.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, September 23 as they travel to Fairfield, Connecticut to take on Sacred Heart.
