Women's Soccer Powers Past AIC, 4-2

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team played host to American International College (AIC) on Wednesday, September 2 in the program's first Northeast-10 game. Adelphi scored two early goals and controlled the action on the way to a 4-2 win. With the win Adelphi improves to 2-0, while AIC falls to 2-1.

Emily Dunne opened the scoring just 13:01 into the action as she collected a Karen Roveto pass and slipped the ball past AIC's Kara Potts to put Adelphi up, 1-0. 24 minutes later Kim Volinski would run past the defense, finding the back of the Yellow Jacket net to push the lead to 2-0.

AIC would not go quietly as less then a minute later Bryony Parker cut the Panther lead in half, as she slipped the ball past Dorothy Connolly. Which is how the half would end, with Adelphi ahead 2-1.

Just under 15 minutes into play in the second frame Amanda Popoli beat Potts off of a Volinski cross that streaked across the Yellow Jacket 12 yard line, pushing the Panther cushion back to two goals, 3-1. AIC answered again, just over a minute later as Morgan Mastronardi vollied a ball into the Adelphi net, making the score 3-2.

Adelphi netted an insurance goal with four and a half minutes remaining as Brianne McDonnell slipped a ball past the AIC defense to a streaking Caitlin Morrison, who chipped it over Potts, making the final score 4-2.

Potts made six saves in the loss for AIC, while Connolly made two stops for Adelphi. The Panthers held an edge in shots, 18-6 and corner kicks, 9-3, while AIC was whistled for more fouls, 11-9.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, September 5 when they travel to the University of Massachusetts - Lowell for a 1:00pm meeting.
