The Adelphi University traveled to Oakdale, New York on Saturday, September 19 to take on Long Island rival Dowling College. The Panthers captured a win in the first set, but could not build on that lead, falling 3-1. With the loss Adelphi falls to 8-6 overall, while Dowling improves to 6-4.
Dowling was in a state of shock by the Panther attack initially, as Adelphi took set one 25-15. The Golden Lions were held to a .179 hitting percentage in the first set with five attacking errors and five service errors. Adelphi was led by Patawe Simms, Hilary Pavels and Chelsea Overholt with three kills apiece. Adelphi had a .320 hitting percentage for the first set.
The Golden Lions came out swinging in the second set, picking up a 25-17 win. The second set saw Dowling hit at a .345 hitting percentage, while Adelphi was held to a .111 percentage.
In the 3rd set Dowling took the advantage in the match with a 25-15 win. As a team the Golden Lions posted a .400 hitting percentage in the set, while Hilary Pavels did her part for the Panthers as she contributed three kills in the set.
The fourth and final set was close as neither team posted a hitting percentage above .189 and again Pavels contributed with four kills but it was not enough as Adelphi fell, 25-19.
Pavels led the way offensively with 14 kills, and posted 11 digs, along with Amy Williams. Heather Mau also turned in a nice performance, racking up 33 assists and 12 digs.
Adelphi returns to action on September 23 when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University at 7:00 pm in the Center for Recreation and Sport.
