The Adelphi University field hockey team hosted the Warriors of Merrimack College this afternoon on Competition Field. Down 2-0 at the half, the Panthers rallied to score three second half goals, but it wasn't enough as Merrimack held on for the 4-3 victory. The Panthers drop to 3-3 while the Warriors improve to 6-3.
The Warriors struck first, 5:06 into the first half, when Allison Doliner setup Sarah Sallato for the score. Merrimack would then add their second tally of the half, 6:46 after their first score, when Jen Otis found April Daugherty to give the Warriors at two-goal lead. The Panthers went into the half with a 10-3 advantage in shots and a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Merrimack wasted 1:02 into the second half to add their third score of the game when Daugherty netted her second goal of the game, coming from Caitlin Kamide. Adelphi would add two goals in less than five minutes. The first was an unassisted goal coming off the stick of sophomore Julianne Gerbino. At 52:47 sophomore Jeanette Heimerle found classmate Crystal Gray to cut the deificit to one goal, off a penalty corner. Just under 12 minutes after Gray's tally, Merrimack would add to their lead when Jaclyn Germano found the back of the net on an unassisted goal. With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Gerbino found Heimerle for the score, but it wasn't enough as Merrimack held on for the victory.
For the Panthers, sophomore Lucia Vigliotti stopped one shot in 36:02 time in net, while freshman Kristine Puzio stopped two shots in 33:58. Keri Bergquist set aside 11 shots en route to the win.
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, when they play host to non-conference opponent Slippery Rock University at 12:00 pm on Competition Field.
