The Adelphi University men's soccer team hosted Virginia Military Institute Friday evening at Competition Field. With the score 0-0 at the end of regulation, the Panthers scored 4:12 into the first overtime period for the 1-0 win. With the win, Adelphi improves to 2-1-2 while VMI falls to 0-5.
Senior captain Alexander Kouznetsov tallied the game-winning score at 94:12 to lift the Panthers to victory.
Both goaltenders kept their respected teams in the game with a number of big saves. In the first half the Panthers got off nine shots and the Keydets six, while VMI held the corner kick advantage at 3-1. The second half played similar to the first with both teams getting off a combined 19 shots.
In the overtime period Adelphi controlled the tempo, getting off three shots and one corner kick, while the Keydets did not register a shot or corner kick.
Red-shirt freshman Kyle Blackmer set aside seven shots, and Brian Sowell stopped 10 shots in defeat.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they play host to La Salle University at 3:00 pm on Competition Field.
