Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University men's soccer team played host to Georgetown University in their season and home opener on Tuesday, September 1. Both the Panthers and Hoyas had solid chances at goal during the double overtime, 0-0 tie, but no one could break through as both goalies make big saves. With the tie both Adelphi and Georgetown open the season at 0-0-1.
A large portion of play in the first half belonged to Georgetown as the Hoyas pushed the pace and kept the ball in the Adelphi half of the field. The pressure resulted in a Georgetown strike from 20 yards out that slipped over the out stretched arm of Adelphi's Thorne Holder before hitting the crossbar.
The Panthers controlled play in the second half, turning a 4-3 shot deficit in the first half into a 6-3 advantage in the second period. Alex Kouznetsov had Adelphi's best opportunity in the second half of play, sending a ball toward goal from 25 yards out that slammed into the crossbar, just missing the back of the net.
In overtime both teams had chances but the best belonged to Georgetown, as the Hoyas managed to get a man behind the defense for the first time all night. Holder found himself one-on-one with a Hoya striker but came off his line and stuffed the threat, preserving the tie.
Overall the Panthers held a 14-10 edge in shots, while Georgetown had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks and each team was whistled for 15 fouls.
Adelphi returns to action on September 5 when they host Fordham at 6:30 pm in Garden City on Competition Field.
