The Adelphi University women’s soccer team hosted Philadelphia University this afternoon in its season opener. The Panthers’ two first half goals was all they needed as they defeated the Lady Rams, 2-0. Junior Brianne McDonnell led the way for the Panthers, recording a goal and an assist.
Philadelphia falls to 1-1 on the season. The Panthers jumped to an early 1-0 lead when senior Amanda Popoli found McDonnell for the score, 3:49 into the contest. Adelphi would add their second goal of the game and the half 20:41 in, when McDonnell sent a corner kick to senior Kayte Kinsley who sent a header to the back of the net.
Adelphi controlled the tempo of the game throughout, as they outshot the Lady Rams 15-4. The Panthers’ held Philadelphia to just one shot in the first half.
Sophomore Dorothy Connolly recorded one save en route to the shutout. Kelli Kowalewski and Rebe Della Peruta combined for eight saves, Della Peruta stopping seven.
The Panthers are next in action on Wednesday, September 2 as they host NE-10 opponent American International College at 6:00 pm on Competition Field.
