The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Rockville Centre, New York on Sunday, May 10 to take on Dowling College in the East Coast Conference tournament Championship game. The regular season champion Panthers scored at least one run in each of the first four innings to slug their way to the tournament title, 11-0. With the win Adelphi improves to 31-14, while Dowling falls to 30-15.
Adelphi scored one run in each of the first two innings, taking a 2-0 lead into the third frame. In the first Rob Paccione opened the game with a single, advancing to second on a wild pitch. He then stole third and scored on a Molloy throwing error. Justin Ciamillo singled up the middle with one out in the second and scored two batters later on a Craig Matteo single to center.
The Panthers put two more on the board in the top of the third when a Bill Melillo double scored Paccione and Boelsen. Adelphi then blew the game wide open in the fourth with three more runs, two of which were scored on a Boelsen double, giving the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
Adelphi pretty much put the game away in the top of the sixth when a Boelsen sacrifice fly scored Paccione and Melillo home run to left field gave the Panthers a 10-0 lead. Paccione drove in the last run of the game with a sacrifice fly scored Anthony Anzalone, giving Adelphi a 11-0 victory.
Mike Bartlett picked up the win, throwing 6.2 scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing just five hits. Teddy Rohrs and Jake Potters came on in relief, pitching a combined 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit.
Adelphi will return to action on May 14 when they participate in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Region.
