May 1, 2009

C.W. Post Game|Molloy Game

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The #2-ranked Adelphi University softball team fell to #3-ranked C.W. Post University, 3-1, and to #5- ranked Molloy College, 2-0, on Day 2 of the ECC Tournament held at New York Institute of Technology. With the losses, the Panthers conclude their season to a 32-14 overall record and await a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Division II Regionals that will be held next weekend at a site to be announced on Sunday, May 3.

C.W. Post Game
Senior Christina O'Hara hit a solo homerun to left field in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough as Adelphi fell to C.W. Post University in the first round of the East Coast Conference Tournament held on the campus of New York Institute of Technology, 3-1.

C.W. Post struck first scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. With two runners on, Katie Fisher hit a RBI double to center scoring Christie Softy for the first run of the game giving C.W. Post a 1-0 advantage.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Adelphi missed a golden opportunity to cut into the C.W. Post's lead. With two outs in the frame, senior Samantha Johnston singled and junior Rochelle Noren walked, however, Sarah Kiser struck out Vogt to end the threat.

Johnston led Adelphi finishing 2-for-4.

The Pioneers added an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning as Shannon Kulnis smacked a solo shot to left field extending the Pioneers lead to 3-0.

Adelphi had two more cracks to cut into C.W. Post's lead as Kiser induced senior Kristen Brennan to pop out to first to end the bottom of the sixth inning with two Panthers on base. O'Hara's bullet put Adelphi on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning; however Kiser retired Noren to close the game.

Sophomore Leighann Bell took the defeat pitching a complete game, allowed seven hits on three runs. Kiser went the distance allowing six hits and struck out nine.

Molloy Game
Molloy's Lauren Urbont pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout to lead the #5 Lions over the #2 Panthers, 2-0, in the East Coast Conference Tournament at New York Institute of Technology.

The game was scoreless heading into the top of the third inning as Molloy's Tiffany D'Alessandro hit the game-winning RBI single to center scoring Shannon Skeggs for the first run of the game.

The Panthers inability to hit with runners in scoring position turned out to haunt them. Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Johnston and Noren were on second and third with two outs. Urbont forced Vogt to ground out to third ending the half inning.

Down 2-0 in the last of the seventh inning, senior Kristen Brennan hit a scorcher to left that advanced junior Ashley Vinti to third. Vinti pinch-ran for senior Diana DiPiano earlier in the frame. With one out, Urbont induced O'Hara to ground out to third as Brophy flied out to left to seal the game for the Lions.

Bell took the loss falling to 13-5 on the season, by pitching a complete-game, allowing two runs on ten hits.

Adelphi was ranked ninth in last week's NCAA Regional Poll. The must now wait to see if they will be able to obtain an at-large bid in the eight-team tournament.
