Baseball Tames The Mavericks, 5-2

Dobb's Ferry, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Dobb's Ferry, New York on Thursday, April 9 for an East Coast Conference contest with Mercy College. The Panthers jumped on Mercy early, getting two runs in the first inning and did not look back, picking up a 5-2 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 18-7 overall and 10-1 in ECC play, while Mercy falls to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in conference.

Singles by Rob Paccione, Ryan Boelsen and Chris Weidlein loaded the bases with one out in the first inning. Billy Melillo drew a walk, scoring Paccione for the first run and Justin Ciamillo stroked a single to right field, scoring Boelsen to give Adelphi a 2-0 edge.

The Panthers put two more runs on the board in the top of the fourth as a Thomas Harper single scored Melillo, who reached base with a walk and advanced to third on a Ciamillo double. Ciamillo crossed home plate one batter later as a Craig Matteo sacrifice fly brought him home, making the score 4-0.

The final Adelphi run was scored in the top of the sixth as Melillo scored on a wild pitch, which gave the Panthers a five run cushion. Mercy came alive in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on a single to left, but Adelphi's bullpen came in to shut the door.

Teddy Rohrs threw two innings of scoreless releif, striking out three, while Jake Potters and Mike Colonna each tossed one inning of shut out baseball. Colonna was credited with his sixth save of the year, while Chris Pabisch picked up his second win of the season, pitching five innings and striking out two.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 11 when they travel to Rockville Centre, New York for a doubleheader with Molloy College.
