The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Pleasantville, New York on Wednesday, April 8 to take on Northeast-10 conference member Pace University. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, courtesy of a Matthew Kenney double, but that was the only lead Adelphi would hold, falling 5-3. The loss drops Adelphi to 17-7 overall, while Pace improves to 12-18-1.
After three scoreless innings Rob Paccione reached base on a bunt down the third base line in the fourth. Paccione stole second and then advanced to third on a fly ball, scoring on Kenney's double. Pace responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a single and a bases loaded out to slip out to a 2-1 lead.
The Setters scored three more runs in the sixth, taking a 5-1 lead on a two RBI single and then a two single to short. Adelphi would enter the eighth inning trailing 5-1, and cut the lead to three runs on a Chris Weidlein home run down the left field line.
The Panthers entered the ninth inning needed three runs to force an extra frame and started off hot, as Justin Ciamillo doubled to left, scoring Lucas Romeo with no outs to pull to within two runs, 5-3. However, that was as close as the Panthers would get, failing to score another run.
Michael Carletti tossed 5.1 innings, allowing all five Pace runs and striking out four to pick up the loss.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, April 9 when they travel to Dobb's Ferry, New York for a 3:30 pm meeting with Mercy College.
