Adelphi Softball Cages The Tigers, 6-0, 11-3

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team swept Holy Family University, 6-0 and 11-3 in a non-conference doubleheader yesterday afternoonat Bristol Borough Little League. The Panthers improve to 13-7 while the Tigers drop to 7-21.

In game one, second baseman Kristin Brennan kick-started the offense for Adelphi with a two-out bases-clearing double for an early 3-0 lead. Right fielder Katie Brophy came through by connecting for a RBI single to plate left fielder Rochelle Noren in the second inning. The Panthers got two more runs in the fourth inning. Shortstop Jessica Vogt was responsible for both runs with a two-run home-run with two down that put the Panthers ahead 6-0.

The Panthers finished the first game with 10 hits. Center fielder Samantha Johnston and Vogt each recorded two hits. They both scored two runs as well.

Christine Robinson earned the victory in the circle. She scattered four hits over seven innings. She struck out two, while walking one. Holy Family's Angela DiBeneditto (so. Forest Hills, Md./John Carroll) pitched the first five innings in a losing effort. She gave up six runs on nine hits. DiBeneditto fanned five. Jody Searfoss (jr. Weatherly, Pa./Marian Catholic) threw two scoreless innings in relief.

Adelphi jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. Vogt drove in the first run with a double. Third baseman Diana DiPiano added a RBI single.

Pitcher Rebecca Costa (so. Frackville, Pa./N. Schuylkill) got the Tigers on the board with a single to plate shortstop Carly Sippel (fr. Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's).

Johnston increased the Panther lead to 4-1 with a two-run single in the second inning. The gap went to 5-1 after a Brophy single. Adelphi tacked on four more runs in the third inning. The big hit in the frame was a two-run single by center Angela Martin.

Holy Family got two runs back in the bottom of the third two pull withing 9-3. DiBeneditto and Searfoss were responsible with RBI ground-outs.

Adelphi added two more runs in the fifth to seal the game.

Marisa Romeo went all five innings to get the win for the Panthers. She allowed three runs on three hits, while walking two and stricking out one. Costa threw the first four innings for the Tigers. She gave up nine runs on 11 hits. Searfoss threw the final inning, surrendering two runs on two hits.
