Softball Sweeps Assumption

Game One|Game Two

Worchester, Mass. - Junior Rochelle Noren went 7-for-9 with five runs scored and three RBI as a total of four players hit over .500 in Adelphi University's doubleheader sweep of Assumption College, 13-4 and 9-0, this afternoon at Marois Field. The Panthers improve to 30-12, while the Greyhounds fall to 18-26.

Senior Katie Brophy combined for a .833 batting average (5-of-6) with three runs scored and two RBI. Junior Ashley Vinti went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and senior Samantha Johnston was 5-for-8 with three runs scored.

Game One
Noren scored the first run off a RBI double by senior Jessica Vogt in the first inning. The Greyhounds pulled ahead, 3-1, in the bottom of the inning on a two RBI double by Gordon who later crossed home plate for the third run. In the fourth inning, the Panthers took advantage of two Assumption errors to tack on five runs. After an unearned run by senior Angela Martin, Vogt's single to right field accounted for the game-tying and game-winning runs as Johnston and sophomore Leighann Bell both scored. The solid hitting for Adelphi continued in the fifth, as Kristin Brennan doubled before scoring on a SAC Fly by Brophy. Martin who singled then stole second, advanced to third on that play and came home on a single by Noren, 8-4.

Two more Assumption errors in the seventh inning, set up four unearned runs for the Panthers, with Vogt picking up her second double of the game, finishing 3-for-5 with five runs batted in.

Bell recorded the win, pitching 5.2 innings in relief with no runs and one strikeout.

Game Two
After a quiet start, the Panthers scored in the top of the third. Johnston singled then advanced on a wild pitch before scoring the game-winning run on a Noren single to right field. Adelphi tacked on a total of eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore Stephanie Byster, along with Vinti accounted for two RBI each in the rally. Vinti and Noren each had two runs scored as Adelphi cruised to a 9-0 win.

Sophomore Marisa Romeo was the winning pitcher in the five-hitter shutout, facing 20 batters with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Panthers close out the regular season on Monday, April 27, as they travel to Old Westbury, New York for a conference double-header vs. NYIT.
