Softball Rattled By Mercy To Split Conference Doubleheader

April 16, 2009

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi softball team split with Mercy College, taking the first game, 6-3, before dropping game two, 3-0. The Panthers are now 20-10 overall and 6-2 in the conference, while the Mavericks move to 14-14 and 5-9 in league play.

Game One
Senior Jessica Vogt's two RBI single drove in senior Samantha Johnston and junior Rochelle Noren to put the Panthers up, 2-0, in the third inning. Vogt scored the final run on a double by senior Diana DiPiano. With the bases loaded, Mercy's Kim Curry was tagged out going home, but a Panther error on a failed pickoff attempt allowed Stockert to score in the fourth inning.

The Panthers regrouped in the bottom of the fourth, tacking on three runs to push their lead to 6-1. Senior Christina O'Hara belted a two-run homerun which also scored senior Kristin Brennan. An RBI single by Noren accounted for the final run for Adelphi, scoring Johnston. Not to be outdone, Alicia Martin knocked in a two run homer for Mercy in the seventh to close the margin, but Adelphi kept them at bay for the win.

Junior Christine Robinson pitched the seven-hitter, with three runs, two earned, one walk and six strikeouts.

Game Two
The Mavericks scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the second inning on an RBI single by Curry. In the sixth inning, with runners on second and third, Paige Cauley hit a frozen rope that the centerfielder mishandled to drive in two runs, 3-0. Adelphi had ten hits in the game, but were unable to score, stranding runners in each of the seven innings.

Sophomore Leighann Bell recorded the loss, giving up thre runs, one earned with two walks and three strikeouts.

The game two loss snapped a 26 game win-streak against Mercy dating back to their first contest in 1995.

Adelphi is back in action this Saturday, April 18, as they travel to Sparkill, New York to take on St. Thomas Aquinas beginning at 12 noon. The Spartans are sponsoring their Pink Zone game and encourage all fans to wear pink.
