Panthers Unable To Recover From Tough Fifth Inning Against Molloy

April 14, 2009

Box Score

Garden City, NY - The rubber game against the Lions of Molloy College proved to be a tough one for the Adelphi University baseball squad. The Panthers got off to a 2-0 lead and carried it into the top of the fifth, however, a four hit, four run effort on the part of the Lions was too much for Adelphi to overcome. The 7-4 loss puts the Panthers at 19-9 overall, 11-3 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while Molloy improves to 8-6, 3-2 ECC.

Game three asked Mike Bartlett to take the hill for the Panthers, where he guided Adelphi to a 2-0 lead, allowing only two hits going into the fifth inning. Three hits and two walks put the Lions up 3-2, and the junior was forced to pass the ball to John Arciuolo. The Panthers would pass the ball along five more times after.

The Panthers, however, would not go quietly against the cross-town foe. Two runs were put up early in the game on a Bill Melillo RBI double and Joe Cassano RBI single in the bottom of the second. The Panthers also rebounded in the sixth with a Lucas Romeo RBI single, and would try the patience of Molloy in the ninth by chipping in one more off a Chris Weidlein RBI double. In total the Panthers combined for 10 hits and forced five walks. Romeo finished 3-3 with one RBI, and Melillo and Thomas Harper each had two hits.

The Panthers will next host the Golden Lions of Dowling College, April 15 at 3:30 p.m.
