Softball Takes Two From Queens, 8-0, 8-1

Game One|Game Two

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team topped Queens College, 8-0 and 8-1 in conference action on a rain-soaked Janet L. Ficke Field this afternoon. The Panthers improve to 19-9 and 5-1 in the ECC. The Knights drop to 18-17 overall and 5-6 in the conference.

Game One
After a scoreless three and a half innings, the Panthers exploded with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. SophomoreStephanie Byster led off with a single up the middle, with pinch runner junior Ashley Vinti eventually advancing to third on a wild pitch. This set up a two-run blast by seniorChristina O'Hara to give Adelphi a 2-0 lead. Junior Christine Robinson followed with a double, then crossed home on a fielding error. Next, senior Jessica Vogt drove in senior Samantha Johnston, 4-0. Senior Diana DiPiano closed out the rally with a two RBI single to bring home Vogt and junior Rochelle Noren. O'Hara tallied a two-run walk-off homer in the fifth inning to end the game, 8-0.

Robinson recorded the one-hit shutout, walking three and fanning six.

Adelphi had eight runs on 10 hits with no errors. Queens had no runs on one hit with one error.

Game Two
The Knights responded in the nightcap by jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as a bases loaded walk brought in Rini. In the bottom of the third inning, the Panthers roared ahead with a seven-run effort. Johnston doubled, then advanced on the throw before knotting the score on a ground out by Vogt. A DiPiano triple accounted for the game-winning run as Noren scored, unearned. Brennan's single drove in DiPiano for the insurance run, 3-1. A RBI single by junior Katie Brophy made it a 4-1 game, followed by Johnston's second rotation driving in two runs on a single to left center, 6-1. Brophy stole home for the final run of the inning. Adelphi tacked on its eighth run in the fourth inning, as Byster scored on a Brophy SAC fly.

Sophomore Leighann Bell was the pitcher of record, in the nine-hitter, with one run, one earned, while walking four and striking out seven.

Adelphi had eight runs on 10 hits with one error. Queens had one run on nine hits with three errors.

The Panthers head to Pleasantville, New York tomorrow, April 15, as they take on Pace University in a non-conference double-header beginning at 3:00 p.m.
