Freshman Erica Devito collected four goals and two assists to help the #1-ranked Adelphi women's lacrosse team to a 16-8 non-conference victory over #9 Stonehill on a cold, rainy afternoon at Competition Field. The Panthers improve to 11-0, while the Skyhawks fall to 8-2.
Stonehill struck first as Jackie Landino scored at 27:38. Freshman Alison Staudt evened the score after grabbing the draw control and finding the back of the net at 26:13. Devito followed with a free position goal, sandwiched by another Staudt goal at 22:55 on a feed from senior Rachel Ray. Ray finished with two goals and five assists. The Skyhawks snuck in a another goal in the 12th minute, 3-2, before the Panthers rattled off five straight to push the lead to 8-2 with 5:01 remaining in the half. Mary Maloney managed her second goal of the day for the Skyhawks in the 26th minute as the Panthers held on to a 8-3 lead at intermission.
The Skyhawks rally continued in the second stanza as Michelle Salmon scored unassisted in the 35th minute. Sophomore Michelle Ceraso tallied two of her three goals in succession to open the margin, 10-4, through the 39th minute. The teams traded goals throughout the rest of the contest, with the Panthers outscoring the Skyhawks 6-4 over the remaining minutes of play. Freshman Marissa Mills accounted for the final two Adelphi goals with less than 3:00 left to play to finish, 16-8.
Junior Caitlin Fitzpatrick made 12 stops in the contest, while Justine Ferland had 10 saves for Stonehill.
Adelphi returns to action next Saturday, April 18, when they travel to Philadelphia University for a 1:00 p.m. start.
