Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University men's lacrosse team played host to East Coast Conference opponent and cross town rival C.W. Post on Saturday, April 11. The Panthers held the Pionners to just three first half goals, but could not capitalize, falling 13-7. The loss drops Adelphi to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in ECC play, while C.W. Post improves to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Adelphi struck first, as Danny Blau scored a man-up goal off of an Eddie Ege assist just two and a half minutes into the action. C.W. Post would not take long to counter and then took a 2-1 advantage with 5:31 on the clock on a Greg Cerar goal. The Pionners opened the scoring in the second quarter with 13:16 on the clock to take a two goal lead, 3-1. However, Blau found an open Paul Benedetto, who found the back of the C.W. Post net to pull Adelphi within one, 3-2, which was the score at the half.
For the first six minutes of the third quarter no one could find the back of the net, but a Matt Dimler goal with 9:05 sparked a Pionner rally. C.W. Post would score nine of the next 10 goals, spanning two quarters and giving the Pionners a 12-3 lead with 6:48 left in the game.
Adelphi would not quit, as another Blau goal with just over five minutes left ignited a Panther run of goals that saw Joe Vitale cut the C.W. Post lead to just six, 13-7 with 1:12 remaining. Unfortunately the Panthers just ran out of time, falling 13-7.
Blau led the way with five points on four goals and an assist, while Eddie Ege added two assists. Zachary Bates made 20 saves in goal, as Andrew Ashkenazy won 11 of 20 face-offs and picked up nine ground balls.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 18 when they travel to Old Westbury, New York for a 1:00 pm meeting with NYIT.
