Twenty-five hits triggered the Adelphi University softball team in its twin bill sweep over host Molloy College, by scores of 11-2 and 7-2, on Friday afternoon. Senior Jessica Vogt led Adelphi with two home runs and eight RBI's on the afternoon. By defeating Molloy, the Panthers improve to 17-9 overall, 3-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Lions fall to 13-17 overall, 4-4 in league play.
Game 1
Adelphi jumped out early, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Leading 2-0 in the top of the second, junior Katie Brophy singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One batter later, senior Samantha Johnston doubled to right center field scoring Brophy to extend Adelphi's lead to 3-0. With two outs and Brophy on second, Vogt hit a bullet on freshman pitcher Allison Ryan's first pitch to left center for a two run homer, increasing the Panthers lead, 5-0.
Two-out hitting put the game out of reach for the Lions as five Adelphi runners crossed the plate. Johnston singled to center field which drove Brophy and junior Ashley Vinti home adding to Adelphi's lead. The Panthers received an extra out and capitalized with Vogt's two run double to left center that scored junior Rochelle Noren and Johnston and Adelphi took a 10-0 margin to the bottom of the third.
The Lions would score two runs in the bottom of the third as junior Tiffany D'Alessandro hit a two run RBI single to right, scoring sophomore Alexandra Sydor and junior Shannon Skeggs.
Johnston, Byster, and Vogt were a combined 9-for-12, with nine RBI's, and six runs scored to lead Adelphi in game one.
Junior Christine Robinson earned the win as she pitched five innings, allowed four hits, two runs, and struck out four. Ryan took the loss for Molloy going three innings, allowing six runs on 13 hits.
Game 2
Senior Diana DiPiano's two-run home run to left capped a four- run fifth as Adelphi took the nightcap, 7-2. DiPiano finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's.
Molloy threatened to put the first runs on the board in the last of the second as they had the bases loaded with one out. Sophomore starting pitcher Leighann Bell struck out sophomore Jennifer Kiernan and Skeggs swinging to get out of the inning unscathed.
Vogt made the Lions pay as she smacked a three-run shot to straight away center to give Adelphi a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Vogt finished the game 2-for-4 with 4 RBI's.
The Lions had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Bell forced Skeggs to reach on a fielder's choice for the second out as freshman Meghan Karpinski was thrown out at home. After Molloy scored their first run of the game on sophomore Alexandra Sydor's walk, Bell got senior Nicole Losito to fly out to Noren to limit the damage.
Johnston also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the contest and Karpinski led Molloy going 3-for-4.
Bell notched the victory pitching seven innings, allowing nine hits, with two walks, and two strikeouts. Sophomore Lauren Urbont went seven innings, allowed seven earned runs, and nine hits in the defeat.
