March 8, 2009

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Senior Bill Melillo hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to pull Adelphi even with UMASS-Lowell at one. However, the Panthers could not get over the hump, falling 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference baseball clash at William J. Bonomo Field. With the victory, the River Hawks improved to 2-1, while Adelphi slipped to 1-2.

Melillo led Adelphi, hitting 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Sophomore P Keith Couch took the loss as he allowed five hits, two earned runs ad two walks while striking out four in five innings.

Lowell Freshman 3B Pat Devlin batted 2 for 4 (singles) with a stolen base while freshman RF Matt Jacobs went 1 for 2 with a RBI double and a walk.

The River Hawks opened the scoring in the fourth inning when junior C Jared Notargiacomo singled to centerfield to score sophomore 1B Taylor von Kriegenbergh. Jacobs then doubled to right field to score junior SS J.T. Leary, who had singled earlier.

Adelphi pulled one back in the seventh inning on Melillo's solo shot.

The Panthers threatened again in the bottom of the ninth when senior pinch hitter Mike Tobia doubled to right center and advanced to third on a fly-out by senior C Ryan Boelsen. Melillo singled, but Tobia got caught in rundown between Notargiacomo and Devlin.

Adelphi returns to action on Monday, March 9 when they take on Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida at 3:00 pm.
