Men's Basketball Falls in ECC Semis, 62-44

Garden City, N.Y. - The third seeded Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to second seed University of Bridgeport on Saturday, March 7 in the semifinals of the East Coast Conference tournament. Adelphi and Bridgeport were deadlocked at the half, 23-23, but the Purple Knights pulled out the win, 62-44. With the loss Adelphi falls to 20-9, while Bridgeport improves to 22-7.

Adelphi and Bridgeport traded leads in the first half, with the Purple Knights claiming the largest cushion, five, with 17:12 on the clock. The game was knotted at 21 with 2:41 to play in the first, but a David Akinyooye lay-up with 30 seconds left gave the Panthers a 23-21 lead. Bridgeport responded with a lay-up as time expired to keep the game tied at 23.

Bridgeport blew the game wide open in the second half, using a 16-2 run over the first 6:15 of action to take a 39-25 lead. Adelphi would battle back but could get no closer then 10 the rest of the way, falling 62-44.

Teairez Stennis led the way for Bridgeport with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Lee Frazier added 14 points for the Purple Knights.

Akinyooye was the lone Panther in double figures with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Richard Byrd chipped in seven points, while Steffon Farley, Sky Khaleel and Mike McDuffie added six points each.
