Senior Rachel Ray totaled nine points on the afternoon with three goals and a game-high six assists to lead the #2 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team past St. Michael's, 21-1. The Panthers improve to 3-0, while the Purple Knights fall to 0-1.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Carter (Mineola, N.Y.) tallied a game-high five goals and assisted on another, while first-year Erica Devito (Shoreham, N.Y.) netted four goals and added two assists. Junior Holly Burke (Churchville, Md.) scored three goals, sophomore Michelle Ceraso (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored two goals, junior Corinne Pingitore (Jackson, N.J.) added two goals, and first-year Alison Staudt (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and junior Vanessa Sotcheff (Rocky Point, N.Y.) notched a goal each to round out the Panthers' offense. Junior Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Port Washington, N.Y.) recorded five saves in the win.
For Saint Michael's, senior Kim Berlo (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) scored the lone Purple Knights' goal with the assist coming from sophomore Elizabeth Siekman (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire). Sophomore Meghan McLaughlin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and first-year Sandra Palumbo (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) each stopped three shots in defeat.
It wasn't until the 16:13 mark of the first half when the Panthers broke the scoreless tie with Carter scoring an unassisted goal. Adelphi would then pour on seven more goals in the next six minutes with Carter scoring three of them and Ray adding helpers on three as well. The Panthers would head into the half with a 10-goal lead. The Panthers would apply the pressure throughout the first nine minutes of the second half, tallying five goals to extend to a 15-0 lead. The Purple Knights' lone goal which came from Berlo came with 2:34 remaining in regulation as she slipped past senior goalie Christina Kozakiewicz (Ridgewood, N.J.)to find the back of the net.
Adelphi returns to action next Wednesday, March 11, as they play host to Southern Connecticut State at 6:00 p.m.
