The Adelphi University baseball team played host to St. Thomas Aquinas on Monday, March 29 in the final game of a three game set. The Panthers and the Spartans were deadlocked at 2-2, heading into the final inning of play, when Adelphi sent a runner across the plate, scoring what would be the game winning run in a 3-2 win. With the win the Panthers improve to 11-5 overall, including a 4-0 East Coast Conference mark.
St. Thomas Aquinas got on the board first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first when a sacrifice fly to center scored a runner from third. In the bottom of the following inning the Spartans tacked on just one more run after loading the bases, taking a 2-0 lead.
Adelphi evened the score in the top of the sixth, as both Chris Weidlein and Craig Matteo reached base to open the inning. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt and then a Rob Paccione single scored Weidlein. Two batters later a Matthew Kenney single to left scored Paccione, knotting the game at two.
Justin Ciamillo started the ninth inning with a walk, reaching first. He then stole second and advanced to third on an error. With Ciamillo on third, Mike Tobia came in to pinch hit, stroking a single that would score Ciamillo and give Adelphi a one run cushion, 3-2.
Mike Colonna allowed one hit in his one inning of relief, striking out three and collecting his fourth save of the year. Teddy Rohrs was credited with the win, throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless no hit baseball, while Mike Bartlett pitched 5.1 innings of two run, five hit ball to open the game.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, March 31 when they play host to Briarcliff at 3:30 pm.
