The Adelphi University women's lacrosse team played host to Assumption on Saturday, March 21 on Competition field in Garden City, New York. Adelphi scored 20 of 21 goals in the final 27 minutes of the first half to build a 21-2 halftime lead on the way to a 25-5 victory. With the win the Panthers improves to 6-0 overall, while the Greyhounds fall to 0-2.
Senior Rachel Ray became the new Adelphi women's lacrosse career point leader with 273 points surpassing Katherine Hock's mark of 272 career points from 2002-2005. Ray accomplished the plateau with 35 seconds remaining in the first half when she assisted on a goal by freshman Allison Staudt. For Ray that was her fourth assist of the afternoon as she was one of the driving forces behind the Panthers 25-5 victory over the Greyhounds.
After freshman Marissa Mills gave Adelphi a 1-0 advantage to start the game, Assumption answered on a goal by senior Shannon Howard to tie the game at 1 with 27:58 shown on the clock. The Panthers went on a ferocious tear scoring 20 of the next 21 goals to end the first half and took a 21-2 lead into the locker room.
In that span, nine different Panthers put themselves in the scoring column. The attack was highlighted the by four goals by Staudt, three apiece by sophomore Michelle Ceraso and freshman Erica Devito, and junior Allison Tumulty along with Ray contributed with two goals. The Panthers out-shot the Greyhounds 31-9 in the first half.
The Greyhounds opened the scoring seven minutes into the second half as freshman Danielle D'Amico scored her third goal of the season. Juniors Vanessa Sotcheff, Danielle Kafarski, Brittany Fronzach, and freshman Tara Gangarossa each put the ball past the Greyhounds freshman goalie Julie Verbic as Adelphi extended their lead to 25-3. Assumption sophomore Sarah Roos scored the final two goals of the game as the Panthers won the contest 25-5.
Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Fitzpatrick stopped five Greyhound shots before giving way to back-up senior Christina Kozakiewicz who had two saves on the afternoon.
The Panthers return to action when they host Bentley College on Sunday March 22, at 12:00 p.m.
