On Wednesday, March 11, the Adelphi baseball team continued their spring training trip in Florida with a game against the Golden Falcons in Miami Shores. The Panthers posted another high-hit game but this time was able to pull out the victory by a score of 11-6 to snap a four game losing streak. With the win, Adelphi improves to 2-4 while Felician moves to 5-4.
The game got underway as Mike Tobia, Ryan Boelsen and Chris Weidlein managed to ring up Felician starting pitcher Jeff Calabrese for three hits, a stolen base and two runs early on. Similarly, in the second inning, the Panthers tallied another three hits, a stolen base, and tacked on yet another run which was sparked by a leadoff double by Matt Kenny who was driven in by Robert Paccione.
Heading into the top of the fourth, the score remained in favor of Adelphi, 3-0. Two walks opened up the fifth followed by three Panther hits, which, combine with two Felician errors resulted in a five run top frame to increase their lead further, 8-0. It was not until the bottom of the fifth until the Golden Falcons finally got on the board, cutting the lead in half and then closing in on Adelphi even more with a two run sixth inning. In the seventh, a homerun by senior Billy Neubauer added an insurance run to put his team up 9-6. A run in each of the last two innings secured the win for the Panthers as they took the game 11-6.
Mike Bartlett tossed five innings and gave up just eight hits, four runs and struck out three as the winning pitcher. Calabrese was the losing pitcher as he lasted only 3.1 innings, gave up 10 hits, eight runs and walked seven batters. Paccione led the offense with a 4-5 effort including two RBI while Boelsen and Bill Melillo each posted two hits each.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, March 12 when they take on Northwood in a double header beginning at noon.
