The Adelphi baseball team traveled down to Florida for a string of seven games over six days beginning with the Fighting Knights of Lynn University. The Panthers jumped out to an early 5-2 lead through two innings, but the Knights posted a combine 12 runs between the fifth and sixth innings to secure the lead. Adelphi suffered their third loss of the season bringing their record to 1-3 while Lynn advances to 16-6.
The game got off to a quick start as senior Bill Melillo drove in Mike Tobia for the game's first run. Chris Weidlein followed up and sent teammate Ryan Boelson across the plate on a single to right field to put the Panthers up 2-0. Lynn responded quickly with a strong inning of their own which was aided by four walked batters and three hits which resulted in a four-run first inning.
Adelphi opened the second on a Billy Neubauer single which would turn into another run. Before the end of the inning, Boelson drove in two runs to regain the lead at 5-4. Lynn would be held scoreless for the next two innings while the Panthers would tack on another run in the top of the fourth on a Paccione homerun.
The Fighting Knights began to pick up momentum as they put up three runs in the fourth, seven in the fifth and five in the sixth. A late three run Panther charge in the seventh was not enough as the score stayed knotted at 19-10 in favor of the Fighting Knights.
John Membreno was the winning pitcher as Teddy Rohrs took the loss while nine different Panther pitchers saw action in the game. Paccione highlighted the offense for Adelphi going 2-4 with a solo home run and two RBI while Boelson was 3-4 and had two RBI. Joe Cassano chipped in with two RBI while Neubauer and Tobia added two hits apiece.
The Panthers return to action when they take on Florida Tech tomorrow, March 10 at 3:00 pm in Melbourne, FL.
