Carter; Ray Lead Adelphi Past SCSU, 24-4

Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore Michelle Ceraso broke a 1-1 tie at 28:51 on a feed from senior Rachel Ray to spark a 16-0 run as the #2 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team cruised to a 24-4 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday night at Competition Field. The Panthers improve to 4-0, while the Owls drop to 0-1.

Just 30 seconds into the contest, freshman Marissa Mills put Adelphi up on a free position shot. Elaina Heiple knotted the score for the Owls within the same minute. Freshman Erica Devito registered all four of her goals and an assist in the 16-0 run for the Panthers, who led 17-1 with 5:32 left in the half. The Owls notched their second goal on an unassisted shot by Teresa Mofredo at 4:16. Sophomore Kaitlyn Carter collected her fifth goal of the half in the 27th minute to push the Panther lead to 18-2. Freshman Tara Gangarossa made it 20-2 at the half on Ray's record-setting assist.

Juniors Alyssa LaBosco and Vanessa Sotcheff teamed up for a goal and an assist each on the first two goals of the second half to push the margin to 22-2. The Owls picked up their third goal with 14:51 left to play on a free position shot by Grace Martha. Juniors Danielle Kafarski and Corinne Pingitore accounted for the final two goals for Adelphi while SCSU found the back of the net in the 58th minute to finish 24-4.

On the contest, Adelphi outshot SCSU 40-13 and held a 25-4 ground ball advantage.

Ray finished with two goals and eight assists for 10 points. Her eight assists breaks her own single-game record of seven assists set on April 26, 2008 against Bryant. Her 10 points ties the Adelphi single-game record she already shared with Diana Lopez (5/3/05 vs. New Haven). Devito and Carter accounted for seven points and six points, respectively.

Junior Caitlin Fitzpatrick made four stops in 34:31 minutes in goal for the win. Senior Christina Kozakiewicz had one save in 25:29 minutes. Lisa Corso had eight saves for the Owls.

The Panthers return to action next Thursday, March 19, when they play host to Georgian Court at 6:00 p.m.
