The Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered its third straight loss, falling to Queens College, 72-58, on Wednesday night at Fitzgerald Gym. The Knights improve to 15-5 and 9-2 in the ECC, while the Panthers fall to 9-11 and 6-5 in the conference.
Freshman Theresa Foley led the team with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Caiafa had 12 points, eight rebounds and six steals, while senior Lisa Manetta had 10 points.
Adelphi jumped out to a 7-2 lead capped by a Serita Lee jumper in the first four minutes of play, but Queens quickly responded with a 9-0 run to pull ahead. The Lady Knights, held a 12 point advantage, 39-27, at intermission.
The Panthers struggled from the field in the second half, going just 1-for-14 from the field in the first 10 minutes of play. The Lady Knights led by as much as 22 points, 54-32, with 10:19 left in regulation. Adelphi was unable to close the double digit gap, as Queens held on for the win, 72-58.
Queens went to the line 32 times for 26 points, compared with just 14-of-21 for Adelphi. The Panther defense forced 27 turnovers while picking up 16 steals, but fell short on the glass as the Lady Knights held a 47-38 rebound advantage.
The Lady Knights got points from every player on the squad, but only Amanda Bartlett scored in double figures with 23. Jennifer Robbins pulled down a game high 13 rebounds.
Adelphi is 1-1 with Queens this season, easily defeating the Lady Knights, 80-71, on November 22, 2008.
The Panthers return home to host NYIT on Saturday, February 7 at 1:00 p.m.
