The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Flushing, New York for a East Coast Conference meeting with Queens College. The score was knotted at 60 when a Sky Khaleel buzzer beater gave the Panthers a 62-60 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 13-7 overall and 7-4 in the ECC, while Queens falls to 4-16 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
The Knights held an early 18-10 advantage but Adelphi proceded to outscore the home team 15-2 to go up 25-20 with 3:41 left in the first half thanks to two Steffon Farley free throws. The two teams went to the locker room after 20 minutes with Adelphi ahead, 29-25.
Adelphi started the second half strongly, opening up a double digit lead at 37-27 but the Knights rallied, taking a 45-44 lead with 9:52 to go on a Mike Liander three pointer. What followed was a five point play by Adelphi which was the catalyst for an 8-0 run. Richard Byrd made a basket and was fouled. Queens was also called for a techincal, giving Adelphi three foul shots, all of which were converted by Alvin Vivican.
The Panthers would eventually build a 58-50 lead but back-to-back three pointers to pulled Queens within a basket with 1:19 to go. Byrd and Edil Lacayo exchanged baskets before a Vivican turnover off the in bounds pass gave the ball back to the Knights with 29 seconds remaining.
Allicott missed a three with seven seconds left but Simmons got the offensive board and was fouled on the play. He made two free throws with 4.2 seconds left to tie the game at 60 but Casey Cosgrove took the in bounds pass, dribbled to mid court and found Khaleel under the basket for the winning hoop as the buzzer sounded.
Allicott led the Knights with 19 points, while Lacayo chipped in 11.
Byrd was the high man for Adelphi with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Vivican added 10 points and Khaleel scored eight and pulled down eight misses.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, February 7 when they play host to NYIT at 3:00 pm in Garden City, New York.
