The Adelphi University women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a tough 64-58 loss to C.W. Post tonight at the Center for Recreation and Sports. A crowd of over 1,000 was on hand for Senior Day and Alumni Day to watch a closely contested match. The Pioneers improve to 12-13 and 10-8 in the ECC, while the Panthers fall to 13-14 and 10-8 in the conference.
Sophomore Ashley Caiafa led the Panthers with 19 points and seven rebounds. Senior Jasmine Travers tied a career-best with 15 points off the bench, while senior Lisa Manetta added 12 points.
After a back and forth start, the Pioneers opened a five point lead, 18-13, on a layup plus the foul by Gina Catherall. Adelphi rallied on a 9-4 run to knot the score at 22-22, on a Travers' layup with 6:44 remaining in the half. But C.W. Post, who shot 55.6 percent from the field, closed on a 12-8 run to hold onto a four-point lead, 34-30, at intermission.
In the second half, the Panthers trailed by as much as nine points, 50-41, with 13:12 to go. Travers scored seven of the next 10 Adelphi points, including a key steal to bring them to within one, 52-51, with 9:01 left on the clock. Adelphi forced a total of 21 Post turnovers, including 11 in the second half. Adelphi regained the lead, 55-54, on a Keri Schumacher jumper followed by a Manetta trifecta to push the margin to four points, 58-54, with 3:47 left in regulation.
But this would prove to be the last field goal for the Panthers as struggled down the stretch and the Pioneers closed on a 10-0 run to secure with win.
The Pioneers were led by Whitney Murrer with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jasmine Moore had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Catherall chipped in 12 points and six assists.
The Panthers must now await the conference seedings to determine where they will play in the East Coast Conference Tournament set to begin next Wednesday, March 4. The semis and finals will be held next Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8, at Adelphi in the Center for Recreation and Sports.
