Men's Basketball Downs Dowling, 55-44

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's basketball team played host to East Coast Conference opponent Dowling College on Saturday, February 21. The Panthers held the Golden Lions to 24 percent shooting in the first half, building a 29-17 half time lead on the way to a 55-44 win. With the victory Adelphi improves to 18-7 overall and 12-4 in ECC play, while Dowling falls to 11-14 overall and 9-7 in the conference.

Adelphi and Dowling went back and forth in the early going of the first half as a Josh Lowe jumper with 14:39 on the clock pulled the Golden Lions to within one, 8-7. However, a Casey Cosgrove triple sparked a 16-4 run, that was closed out by two Richard Byrd free throws, giving Adelphi a 24-11 lead with 5:38 remaining in the half.

Dowling could not get any closer then 11 the rest of the first half, entering the locker room down by 12, 29-17.

The Golden Lions came out of the intermission hot, using a 12-4 run in the first six and a half minutes of action to cut Adelphi's advantage to just four, 33-29. The Panthers answered back with a 9-1 run of their own, capped by a Byrd jumper, that pushed Adelphi's margin to 11 points, 41-30, with 7:58 remaining.

In the final eight minutes Dowling would get no closer then seven points, as Adelphi hit on three of four free throws down the stretch to secure the win, 55-44.

David Seagers led Dowling with nine points and seven rebounds, while both Keith Nandin and Leonard Lans added eight points each.

Casey Cosgrove was the high man for Adelphi with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Byrd also reached double figures, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 misses.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 25 when they travel to Bronxville, New York to take on Concordia College at 7:00 pm.
