The #3 ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team opened up the 2009 season with a convincing 19-3 victory over Rollins College. The Panthers improve to 1-0, while the Tars fall to 1-1.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Carter scored the first of her two goals on a free position shot at 29:10 to put the Panthers up. Junior Holly Burke made it a 2-0 game in the 25th minute on the first of her three goals. Marissa Giannerini got the Tars on board at 23:58, but sophomore Michelle Ceraso tallied three goals in an 8-0 run to put the Panthers out of reach, 10-1. Rollins managed to score twice more in the half, but freshman Erica Devito notched three goals in the final five minutes of play to help push Adelphi's lead to 15-3 at intermission.
Adelphi trimmed back its offense in the second half, taking just 12 shots, yet still managing to find the back of the next five times. Freshman Marissa Mills scored her second goal of the night at 26:36 on a feed from senior Rachel Ray. Ray had three assists and a goal in the contest. Adelphi's defense held Rollins scoreless in the second half, forcing six turnovers.
Junior goalie Caitlin Fitzpatrick made eight stops in 53:52 minutes of play, while senior Christina Kozakiewicz had one save in 6:08 minutes in the net. Lisa Weber recorded 10 saves for the Tars.
The Panthers return home from a week long trip to Florida this Sunday. Next up, they will host American International College on Sunday, March 1, at 1:00 p.m.
