Adelphi Women Turned Away at Molloy, 74-65

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Despite five players scoring in double figures, the Adelphi University women's basketball team was unable to top Molloy College, falling 74-65, on Saturday afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improve to 19-3 overall and 13-1 in the conference, while the Panthers drop to 11-12 and 8-6 in the ECC.

senior Lisa Manetta led the Panthers with 16 points, four assists and three steals. Senior Danielle Parks tallied 12 points off the bench, while senior Serita Lee had 11 points and eight boards. Sophomore Ashley Caiafa and freshman Theresa Foley each chipped in 10 points.

The Panthers came out strong in the first stanza, opening on a 6-0 run capped by a layup by Lee at 16:13. Adelphi stayed ahead for most of the half until Molloy closed on a 7-1 run to tie the game at 28-28 on a Katelyn Dunn layup with 2:02 remaining. Clarissa Jones scored the last five points for Molloy in the final seconds to put them up, 33-31, at intermission.

In the second half, a Caiafa jumper knotted the score at 33 before Manetta put the Panthers ahead, 35-33, at 19:05. The Lions responded on a 7-0 run to pull ahead, 42-35, at 16:47. The game remained close until Molloy pushed its margin to double digits, 56-45, on a Kymira Woodberry basket at 7:39. The Panthers managed to close to within six points, 62-56, on a layup by Parks with 3:18 left in regulation. But solid free throw shooting by the Lions in the final minute kept the Panthers at bay. Adelphi shot 50 percent (14-28) from the field in the second half, but Molloy connected on 13-22 (59.1%).

Molloy was led by Jones with 20 points, including 10-of-14 from the charity stripe. Woodberry had 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Tatiana Lopez had 11 points.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 18, as they travel to Dobbs Ferry to take on Mercy College in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
