The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) in an East Coast Conference (ECC) contest on Wednesday, February 11. The Panthers held the Spartans to under 30 points in each half, collecting a 71-49 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in conference play, while STAC falls to 7-14 and 5-8 in the ECC.
The first 10 minutes of play were tight as neither team was able to take more then a four point lead. However, with the Spartans on top, 19-18, two Richard Byrd free throws launched a 15-4 run that lastest the rest of the half, giving Adelphi a 33-23 halftime edge.
STAC cut the lead to just five, 33-28, in the opening two minutes of the second half, but a triple from Alvin Vivican and a dunk from Mike McDuffie pushed Adelphi's cushion back to 10 points, 38-28. From there the Panthers extended the lead to 20 points with a 10-1 run that was capped by two Steffon Farley free throws.
The Panthers kept the pressure up the remainder of the game, never letting STAC get any closer then 15, picking up a 71-49 victory.
Ra'Shad James led the Spartans with 16 points, while Akeem Comas chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Williams also reached double figures, scoring 13 points.
Richard Byrd paced Adelphi with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Vivican also scored 14 points and grabbed six misses in the win.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, February 14 when they travel to Rockville Centre for an ECC battle with Molloy College.
