Adelphi Women Nipped By New Haven, 73-69

West Haven, CT - The Adelphi University women's basketball team led for most of the contest, but the University of New Haven edged the Panthers, 73-69, in the final minutes. The Chargers improve to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Panthers fall to 0-7 overall and 0-6 in the NE-10.

Four players scored in double figures led by freshman Kara Tancredi with 16 points and seven rebounds, while junior Ashley Caiafa also recorded 16 points along with six rebounds. Sophomore Theresa Foley and freshman Alexis Williams each contributed 12 points, with Williams pulling down a team-high eight boards.

The Chargers had an early lead, but the Panthers took control at 13:05 on an Erika Cottle trifecta, 10-8, Adelphi led by as much as five points, 22-17, before UNH rallied back on a 13-4 run. A three-pointer by Caiafa sparked a 18-2 Panther surge, capped by another three-pointer by Williams, 44-35, with less than a minute remaining in the half. Adelphi shot 50% from beyond the arc in the first stanza and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to hold a 44-37 lead at intermission.

Adelphi continued to lead in the second half, growing its margin back to nine points, 61-50, with 12:44 on the clock. Tancredi drained a three-pointer with 6:10 left in the contest, 69-61, but it would prove to be the final field goal for the Panthers. In those remaining minutes, Adelphi was 0-6 from the field, with five turnovers as UNH rallied on a 12-0 run to claim the win, 73-69.

UNH's Dominique Stellmacher registered a game-high 31 points, including 5-for-10 from three-point range. Baragnger added 13 points, with Alysia Saunders grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.

Adelphi returns to non-conference action this Thursday, December 10, as they host Queens College at 5:30 p.m.
