Men's Basketball Holds Off Nyack, 65-61

The Adelphi University men's basketball team hosted Nyack College this evening in the second day of the Adelphi Holiday Classic. The Panthers turned over the Warriors 13 times, while collecting eight blocked shots en route to the victory, 65-61. The Panthers improve to 12-1, while the Warriors drop to 6-6.

Both teams shot well from the field and behind the arc in the first half. The Panthers shot 54-percent from the field and 75-percent (6-8) from three, while the Warriors shot 52-percent from the field and 67-percent (6-9) from 3-point range.

With the score even at 15-15, Casey Cosgrove drilled a 3-pointer with 11:18 left in the first half to put the Panthers up 18-15. After a Nyack free throw from James Oyamo, Chris Diasparra connected a on 3-pointer to put the Panthers up 21-16 with 10:41 remaining. After two free throws from Jose Lopez, the Brown and Gold went on a 7-0 with five of the points coming from Robert Johnson. The Warriors would fight back to cut the lead to 39-36 with less than three minutes remaning, but a David Akinyooye put back and a John Calarco jumper gave Adelphi a five-point cushion into the half, 43-38.

Adelphi would come out of the half and extend their lead to 47-38, less than two minutes into the second half with Johnson and Steffon Farley scoring a bucket each. A Lopez jumper and 3-pointer would cut the deficit to 49-48 in favor of the Panthers with 12:13 left in the contest. After the fourth tie of the game, 56-56, the Panthers would go on a 7-1 run to take a 63-57 lead with 2:46 left on the clock, which was sparked by a Richard Byrd 3-pointer. Nyack would make the score 63-61 after an Oyamo lay up, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers hit free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

For the Panthers, Byrd tallied a game-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals. Johnson tossed in 13 points, Cosgrove added 12 points, and Farley filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks.

For the Warriors, Aundrae Williams and Lopez both led the way with 16 points each. Oyamo chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds.
