Panthers Struggle At Southern Conn, 73-58

New Haven, Conn. - Despite three players scoring in double figures, the Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Southern Connecticut State, 73-58, tonight at Moore Field House. The Panthers drop to 0-5 and 0-3, while the Owls improve to 5-1 and 3-1 in the Northeast-10.

Freshman Kara Tancredi led the Panthers with 19 points. Sophomore Theresa Foley had 12 points and six rebounds, while freshman Alexis Williams added 10 points.

Adelphi had a solid start in the first half, shooting a combined 52.2 percent from the field, while SCSU made just 34.2 percent of its shots. The difference was that the Owls went to the charity stripe 10 times, connecting for seven, while the Panthers did not go to the line. Adelphi trailed by 10 points, 34-24, at intermission.

The Panthers remained composed in the second half, closing the gap to five points, 39-34, on a jumper by Williams. The Owls rallied back on a 14-4 run to open the margin, 53-38, with 10:29 remaining. Southern Connecticut maintained a comfortable lead for the rest of the game to hold on for the win.

Overall Adelphi shot 42.9 percent compared with 38.6 percent for SCSU. It was a game marred with tunovers, with both teams combining for 59 turnovers. However, the Owls outrebounded the Panthers 53-30.

Shelley Pierson led the Owls with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jacqueline Johannes chipped in 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, December 5, when they host American International College at 1:00 p.m.
