Panthers Hold On To Defeat Queens, 69-67

The Adelphi University women's basketball hosted the Knights of Queens College this evening at the Center for Recreation and Sport. The Panthers, who were down eight at halftime, came back to defeat the Knights, 69-67. The win puts the Panthers at 1-7, 0-6 in the NE-10, while Queens falls to 1-6 and 1-3 in the ECC.

The Knights came out hot right from the opening tip and jumped out to an early 20-10 lead over Adelphi. Queens would then extend their lead to 25-10, courtesy of a Jennifer Robbins 3-pointer and two free throws from Janine Maser. The Panthers would chip away at the Knights' lead and cut the deficit to 10, 27-17. Adelphi would then go on a 5-0 run with all five points coming from freshman Kara Tancredi. Adelphi would cut the lead to 32-29 after a Theresa Foley lay-up, which was then followed by a Harnischfeger 3-pointer. Queens would end the final three minutes of the half on a 7-2 run to take a 39-31 halftime lead. 

The second half saw the Knights jump out to another double-digit lead, but the Panthers would once again fight back. Down 45-35, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to get within three, sparked by an Ashley Caiafa 3-pointer. The Panthers would take their first lead of the game since the opening minutes of the first half, 46-45, after a made free throw by freshman Samantha Perez. Both teams would trade baskets for the next nine minutes with no team having a lead larger than three. With the Panthers up 56-54 with 3:44 remaining, they would get a lay-up from Tancredi followed by a Caiafa jumper to go up six with 2:34 left. Brittany Faherty would hit a step-back three from the corner to cut the Panthers' lead to 68-67, but Foley's free throw with 11 seconds left was all the Panthers needed, as they held on for the victory.

For the Panthers, Foley notched a double-double with a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Caiafa would add 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Tancredi had a solid all-around game with seven points, eight assists, and four rebounds. Sophomore Erika Cottle tossed in 10 points to round out the scoring.

For the Knights, Christine Harnischfeger scored a game-high 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting from behind the arc. Faherty added 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds while, Chole Johnson tossed in nine.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, December 12 when they host non-conference opponent Caldwell College at 1:00 at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
