The Adelphi University men's soccer team played host to Ivy League competitor Columbia University in their regular season finale on Tuesday, November 3. The Panthers fell behind in the 54th minute, but scored back-to-back goals eight minutes apart to steal a win from Columbia. With the win Adelphi closes out the regular season at 11-2-4 overall, while the Lions fall to 4-10-1.
After a back and forth affair in the first half, Columbia opened the scoring in the 54th minute when Will Stamatis' shot struck the post, came back towards him and was then deflected to the waiting feet of Bayo Adafin. Adafin found the upper left corner of the Panther goal, giving the Lions a 1-0 edge.
Adelphi did not take long to respond, scoring less then eight minutes later when Brandon Stoneham collected a ball that was misplayed by Columbia's Alexander Aurrichio and rippled the back of the Lion net, knotting the game at one. Issa Tall scored the winning goal for the Panthers in the 70th minute courtesy of Johann Craan. Craan played an outstanding through ball to Tall, who beat the Lion defense and then curved the ball around a diving Aurrichio to secure the win for Adelphi.
Thorne Holder picked up the win and two saves for Adelphi, while Aurrichio made four stops in the loss. However, Columbia held an edge in shots, 10-9 and corner kicks, 5-1 in the loss.
Adelphi will return to action on November 13 when they participate in the semifinals of the Atlantic Soccer Conference tournament in Farmville, Virgina.
