Adelphi Women Drop Home Opener Against St. Rose, 63-51

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered its third setback, dropping its season home opener against The College of Saint Rose, 63-51. The Panther fall to 0-3 and 0-2 in the NE10, while the Golden Knights improve to 3-1 and 2-1 in the conference.

Sophomore Theresa Foley led the Panthers with 18 points and six rebounds, while junior Ashley Caiafa had 14 points.

Adelphi held an early 6-3 in the opening minutes, but St. Rose pulled ahead for good, 17-16, on a Ali Johnson layup at 16:17. The game remained close, with the Panthers closing to within two on a shot by Kara Tancredi at 11:42. The Golden Knights used a shooting slump to rattle off nine unanswered points to pull ahead on a made three-pointer by Emily Trapp. Adelphi responded on an 8-0 run of its own to close the gap, 25-21, with 4:45 remaining. St. Rose again pulled ahead, 32-23, with less than two minutes remaining, but Adelphi finished strong, including a Caiafa trifecta in the last 30 seconds to make it a three point game at the half, 34-31.

The Golden Knights opened the second half with a three-pointer, but the Panthers kept it close, 37-35, on a Foley jumper at 18:04. Midway through the stanza, St. Rose used a 7-0 run to begin to pull away. The visitors led by as much as 13 points, 58-47, with 3:47 remaining in regulation. A 50 percent shooting game kept Adelphi at bay as St. Rose closed out the contest, 63-51.

St. Rose also used strong defensive play in the match, outrebounding Adelphi, 46-25, while also racking up seven blocks. Their offense however, was marred by 30 turnovers, including 12 Panthers steals.

Ashley Rath led all players with 22 points along with eight rebounds. Johnson added 12 points.

The Panthers are back in action this Saturday, November 28, as they head to Worcester, Massachusetts to take on Assumption College at 1:00 p.m.
