The Adelphi University women's baskeball team trailed 33-23 at the half and were never able to rally back, falling to Pace University, 67-45, tonight at Goldstein Fit Center. The Setters open the season with a 1-0 record, 1-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Panthers fall to 0-2 and 0-1 in the conference.
Both teams shot 41 percent from the field in the first half, with the Panthers leading for most of the first ten minutes of play. Junior Ashley Caiafa tallied eight of her team-high 15 points in the first stanza. Adelphi led by as much as five points, 15-10, on a jumper by Samantha Perez at 11:15. Pace rattled off nine unanswered points to pull ahead, 19-10, a margin they maintained through half-time.
In the second half, Adelphi managed to close to within five points, 36-31, with 16:04 on the clock, but that would prove to be the closest. The Setters surged ahead, opening a double-digit lead, 47-33, on a three-pointer by Kristin Connolly at 9:13. Pace went 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, pulling away to a 22 point lead, 63-41, with less than three minutes remaining.
Pace dominated the glass, pulling down 42 rebounds, including 16 second chances, compared with 26 for Adelphi. The Setter shot 43.9 percent from the field, while the Panthers were 19-for-50 (38 percent).
Maral Javadifar led the Setters with 22 points and seven rebounds. Brittany Huggins had 12 points and Taylor Losey added 10 points.
Adelphi returns to action next Tuesday, November 24, as they host The College of Saint Rose in its season home-opener. Tip off is slated 5:30 p.m.
