The Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered a 55-49 defeat at C.W. Post in its season opener tonight at the Pratt Center. The Pioneers improve to 1-0, while the Panthers drop to 0-1.
Freshman Kara Tancredi had 13 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Samantha Briendbach led the Panthers with 14 points off the bench, including 6-6 from the free point line.
Adelphi trailed by as much as five points, 12-7, with 13:13 left in the first half. But the Panthers outscored the Pioneers, 10-4 over the next five minutes to take the lead on an Alexis Williams jumper at 7:44.  AU opened the lead to six points, 25-19, but despite shooting 41.7 percent from the field, went cold with 3:52 to go. The Pioneers, only 29.4 percent in the half, scored the last five points of the half to close the gap, 25-24, at intermission.
C.W. Post's rally continued into the second half as they held the Panthers scoreless through the first five minutes of action. Noelle Pawlicki's three-pointer capped a 10-0 run, 34-25 at 15:11. The Pioneers manage to hold the Panthers at bay over the next 10 minutes. However Adelphi began to chip away at the deficit, even closing the margin to two points, 45-43, on a Tancredi lay-up with 5:13 left in regulation. But the Panthers again struggled, going 1-4 down the stretch, while Post responded to close out the contest on a 10-3 run to hold on for the win.
The Pioneers were led by Felicia Joyner with 25 points, while Janea Aiken added 12 points.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, November 19, as they travel to Pace University to open its 2009-2010 conference schedule at 5:30 p.m.
