Lowell, MA -
The Adelphi University volleyball team came within a few points of capturing the program's first Northeast-10 Championship in just their first season in the conference on Saturday, November 14 in Lowell, Massachusetts. However, the host Riverhawks were too tough on their home court, squeezing past Adelphi, 3-2. With the loss Adelphi falls to 27-9 overall and will await a bid to the NCAA tournament.
All five games were tight as four of the five were decided by four points or less. Adelphi registered 16 kills in game one, while UML was held to an attack percentage of just 0.136, as the Panthers secured a 25-23 win. The second game went the Riverhawks was as the host school picked up 22 kills in a 25-22 win, evening the match at one game apiece.
UML took control, 2-1 after a 25-17 win in game three, thanks in part to eight attack errors by the Panthers. Adelphi rebounded in game four, posting the highest attack percentage of the game at 0.366 and collecting 19 kills in a 25-21 win.
The fifth game was tight throughout as there were six ties, the final tie coming at eight all, thanks to a Chelsea Overholt kill. A Riverhawk kill and Adelphi setting error gave UML a 10-8 edge, which was cut to 10-9 on a Heather Mau kill.
However, the Riverhawks would move out to a 12-9 lead, but an Adelphi timeout calmed down the Panthers, who pulled to within one, 13-12, on a UML attack error. Unfortunately Adelphi could not overcome the one point margin as a Riverhawk, and an Adelphi attack error gave UML the win, 15-12.
Hilary Pavels led three Adelphi players in double digit kills with 18, while Kelsey Hackett had 15 and Overholt posted 14 winners. Heather Mau had a game-high 56 assists and Amy Williams had a game-high 26 digs. Mau also posted 18 digs, as both Pavels and Jennifer McKenna reached double figures with 16 and 10 digs each.
For her play over the course of the two-day tournament senior libero Amy Williams was named to the All-Tournament team.
