Volleyball Advances to Conference Semis, with 3-1 Win Over AIC

Lowell, MA - The second seeded Adelphi University volleyball team topped seventh seeded American International College (AIC) in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Northeast-10 Championship Tournament, hosted by UMass Lowell. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead and narrowly dropped the third game, before closing out the match in the fourth game.

Adelphi kept AIC off balance in the first set as the Yellowjackets struggled falling in the first set 25-12. The Panthers kept the pressure on early in the second before AIC rallied late to pull within 24-20, but Adelphi took that set as well, 25-20. The next two sets were as close as they could get, with the Yellow Jackets taking the third set, 29-27, and the Panthers (26-8) taking the fourth set, 26-24.

Adelphi had three players reach double-digits in kills. Freshman outside hitter Chelsea Overholt (Centrevilla, Va.),put down 18 kills, while junior outside hitter Hilary Pavels (North Woodmere, N.Y.) registered a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs.

Senior middle blocker Kelsey Hackett (Alta Loma, Calif.) added 13 kills with one error in 27 attempts for a .440 hitting percentage. Junior setter Heather Mau (Honolulu, Hawaii) tallied 48 assists and senior libero Amy Williams (Bloomington, Ind.) notched a match-high 30 digs.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, November 14 when they participate in the semifinals of the Northeast-10 tournament in Lowell, Massachusetts at 2:00 pm.
