The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to Merrimack on Saturday, October 31 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Panthers posted 36 kills as a team, while holding Merrimack to just 26 in a 3-0 win. With the victory Adelphi improves to 22-8 overall and 12-1 in conference play, while the Warriors fall to 16-9 and 8-4 in the Northeast-10.
Adelphi trailed 7-3 early in game one, before Bree Popham took serve. Popham, held serve for seven points, helping the Panthers to a 10-8 lead. Later in the game the score was knotted at 18 and Merrimack controlled the serve, however a service error gave the Panthers the lead, which was extended to 22-18 in favor of Adelphi, on the way to a 25-19 win, thanks to three straight Warrior attack errors.
The Panther again trailed early in game two, but turned things around quickly as a 3-1 deficit, turned into a 10-7 lead on a Chelsea Overholt kill. From there Adelphi extended the lead to 19-14 on a Popham service ace and closed out the game, 25-21, thanks to a Merrimack error.
The third and final game was all Adelphi, as the Panthers pushed out to a 9-2 lead, getting three kills by Hilary Pavels. From there Adelphi claimed their largest lead, 19-9, on another Merrimack error, before collecting a 25-12 win.
Kelsey Hackett led Adelphi with nine kills, while Patawe Simms added eight, Heather Mau had a game-high 28 assists as well. Amy Williams chipped in 17 digs and Popham had 15 digs to go along with four aces.
Adelphi returns to action on November 3 when they travel to Lakewood, New Jersey for a 7:00 pm meeting with Georgian Court.
