Freshman Meghan Carey broke a scoreless tie in the 71st minute to guide the Adelphi University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State tonight. The Panthers finish the regular season with 10-5-2 overall record and 8-5-2 in the Northeast-10 while the Owls fall to 8-9-1 and 5-9-1 in the conference.
SCSU came out hard in the first half, riddling the AU net with seven shots. Sophomore goalie Dorothy Connolly had three saves in the first 12 minutes of play to keep the Owls at bay. In contrast, the Panthers offense managed just three shots in the first 45 minutes of action.
The second half saw Adelphi pick up the intensity as they held a 6-4 shot advantage over Southern Connecticut. A corner kick by senior Elise Maniguet helped to set up the game-winning goal, and first collegiate point for Carey at 70:27.
Connolly collected her eighth shutout of the season with six saves in the contest. Katie Didio and Olivia Heffernan split time in the net for the Owls, with each making two saves.
Adelphi is currently fifth in the NE10 standings, and will advance to the conference playoffs which will begin on November 1. Complete brackets will be posted as soon as they are available.
