The fifth-seeded Adelphi University field hockey team traveled to North Andover, Massachusetts this afternoon to take on fourth-seeded Merrimack College in the Quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Warriors 2-0 lead in the first half proved to be too much as the Panthers came up short, 2-1.
The Warriors struck first, 14:14 into the contest, when Katie Zubkus set up April Daugherty for her 12th goal of the season. The score would remain 1-0 headed into the half with Merrimack holding a 10-3 shot advantage as well as a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners.
The second half started out similar to the first half with Merrimack finding the back of the net once more. With 6:02 off the clock in the second half, Sarah Salatto scored an unassisted goal for her third tally of the season to give the Warriors a commanding 2-0 lead. The Panthers would eventually cut the lead in half with less than nine minutes remaining when Brittany Kinsley and Lindsay Williams fed Emilee Rahner for her first score of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Warroirs held on for the victory.
The Panthers had their opportunities in the second half, getting off 11 shots to Merrimack's nine, and holding a 7-2 edge in penalty corners.
Kerri Bergquist set aside four shots in the victory, while Lucia Vigliotti recorded eight saves for the Panthers.
The Panthers end their season with an overall record of 12-8, while Merrimack improves to 13-7 and advances to the Northeast-10 Semifinals to take on first-seeded Stonehill College on Saturday, October 31.
