Volleyball Nipped By New Haven, 3-2

West Haven, CT - The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled to West Haven, Connecticut to take on Northeast-10 and former East Coast Conference rival New Haven on October 23. The Panthers trailed 2-1, three games into the match, but knotted the action at two before falling 3-2. With the loss Adelphi sits at 19-7 overall and 9-1 in conference play, while New Haven improves to 20-4 overall and 11-0 in the Northeast-10.

Adelphi held a 24-22 late in the first set, but New Haven rallied last to collect a 26-24 win. The Charger's Heather Ladao served the final four points of the match to help New Haven claim game one. Adelphi trailed by six points (19-13), before going on a 11-3 scoring spree that swung the game in the Panther's favor.

The Pantehrs regrouped in game two and led in the opening points of the second set and eventually pushed their edge to 16-10. New Haven rallied and scored nine of the next 13 points to cut the Panther lead to 20-19. However, a Charger service error and Panther kill gave Adelphi the advantage and momentum as they sealed the 25-23 set victory.

New Haven took the third set by a score of 25-21. Adelphi again led early in the set, but the Chargers gradually inched back into the match and took a 19-13 lead. The Panthers made a late surge, but New Haven held on, taking a 2-1 match lead with a 25-21 win..

The fourth set, was controlled by the Panthers, who took a 3-0 deficit and turned it into an 8-5 lead just 10 points later. An attack error gave Adelphi a 13-10 lead later in the set. Adelphi then went on a 9-3 run to open a 22-13 lead and put the game out of reach as seven points later, the Panthers evened the match at 2-2 with a kill.

In the deciding set, the two teams played point-for-point for most of the first half of the 15-point set. New Haven held a one-point 11-10 lead late, but that Adelphi could not finish the rally, falling 15-11.

Kelsey Hackett led four Panthers with double digit kills as she posted 16, both Patawe Simms and Hilary Pavels had 12 and Chelsea Overholt added 11. Heather Mau chipped in 46 assists, while Amy Williams had a game high 23 digs. Pavels, Bree Popham and Mau also collected more then 10 digs as Pavels had 18, Popham, 13 and Mau 11.

Adelphi will return to action on Sunday, October 25 when they host LeMoyne and Bridgeport in Garden City, New York.
