Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. -
Junior Kim Volinski recorded both goals for Adelphi as they topped Bentley University, 2-0, to close out their home regular season schedule this afternoon at Competition Field. With the win, the Panthers improve to 9-5-2 and 7-5-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Falcons drop to 6-9-1 and 4-9-1 in the conference.
Both teams seemed to struggle in the first half, with neither finding a good rhythm. The Panthers did manage five shots compared with just two for the Falcons but the score was knotted at 0-0 at the end of the first half.
The second half saw both squads showing more urgency and increased intensity in their play. Volinski put the Panthers on the board at 57:14 on a cross from junior Brianne McDonnell which she chipped into the lower right corner of the net.
The duo teamed up again in the 82nd minute as McDonnell connected with a waiting Volinski, who was flanked by two Bentley defenders. She blasted the shot from five yards out past the diving arms of goalkeeper Kara Smith to push Adelphi's margin to 2-0.
Sophomore Dorothy Connolly recorded the shutout with three saves, while Smith made six stops for Bentley.
The Panthers close out the 2009 regular season on the road as they travel to Southern Connecticut State next Wednesday, October 28, for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
